The trench coat, a timeless part of women's wardrobes: a fascinating history & 9 fashion tips
You're all familiar with the trench coat, the often beige mid-season coat that protects us from the elements and has been reinvented by the top brands. But do you know its origins? Yes, the trench coat is a fashion essential with a rich history. We'll be revealing the secrets behind its invention, and giving you our top tips on how to wear a trench coat with style and elegance. Are you ready?
Opinions differ as to its origins. The trench coat is said to be descended from the waterproof coats invented by Charles Macintosh and Thomas Hancock in the 1820s. Their rubberized cotton creation was intended for the gentlemen of the time. In 1853, tailor John Emary designed a raincoat and founded the Aquascutum company. Meanwhile, Thomas Burberry created his eponymous brand in 1856 and marketed his waterproof fabric. Both designers are credited with inventing the trench coat.

Thomas Burberry revolutionized these outfits by inventing gabardine, a tightly woven waterproof fabric. Much lighter, these new coats were quickly adopted by British troops, who wore them in the trenches. The trench coat was born!

...A MUST-HAVE FASHION ESSENTIAL
Initially reserved for officers, the trench coat established itself as a coat for the wealthy classes. Once the war was over, soldiers continued to wear them, and they quickly became popular. Initially masculine, Burberry helped to feminize it. The trench coat became part of the wardrobe of travelers and Hollywood stars. Frequently used to dress influential men, gangsters, detectives or femmes fatales, the trench coat became emblematic. Worn by celebrities, it symbolized power, elegance and refinement, and seduced the crowds.
Born as a military garment, the trench coat had to be comfortable and provide great freedom of movement. Although its use has evolved, we've retained its emblematic codes to make it a timeless women's garment, elegant and practical.
