Savile Row is a London street in the Mayfair district that hides a fascinating history! It enjoys a reputation unequalled anywhere in the world, and is the benchmark for made-to-measure men's suits. Anderson & Sheppard, Gieves & Hawkes, Henry Poole...the big names are numerous and have been thriving here for centuries!
THE STORY OF A MYTH
Tailors like Henry Poole began to set up shop on Savile Row in the late 18th century, in an area frequented by London's high society. Their clientele included royalty, statesmen and the great names of literature and theater.
Costumes of the time were mainly military or sportswear, for weekends in the country for example. Gieves and Hawks, two companies that prospered in the 19th and 20th centuries as the main tailors for the Royal Navy and the army, are remembered from this period. The expansion of the British Empire brought them worldwide renown, and they later merged under the name Gieves and Hawks.
The 20th century saw the birth of the modern suit, which became the norm. Despite some difficulties in the interwar period, Savile Row tailors enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the 1960s. Since then, they have continued to work tirelessly in the pursuit of sartorial perfection, and to this day the street retains its mythical reputation.
UNIQUE KNOW-HOW
Today, there are some 40 boutiques with around a hundred tailors. Every year, some 7,000 suits are made for Hollywood stars, sports stars and members of the royal family.
Made-to-measure suits require
very precise know-how. From the choice of fabric to the intricate construction of a jacket, making a single suit can take
up to 24 hours of work and a dozen people.
Savile Row embodies this art and know-how like nowhere else, and that's why this street of tailors continues to fascinate!
